The traditional semantic accounts of spatial prepositions, main1ly focusing on the geometric relationship between the locating object and the located object, are proved to be inadequate to explain the comprehension and use of spatial prepositions in all the real situations. To compensate the deficiency, it is necessary to take into consideration the functional relationship between the Figure and the Ground, as well as the cognitive constraint on the choice of the Figure and the Ground.
