Purpose Hypertension is the most important risk factor of atherosclerosis. Pulse Wave Veinism (PWV) is one of the simple and effective noninvasive methods to evaluate atherosclerosis. To investigate whether there is a correlation between different blood pressure levels and PWV in hypertensive patients. Methods The blood pressure and baPWV were measured in the physical examination center and the outpatient clinic of our hospital from September 2009 to September 2010. The selected subjects were divided into four groups according to the blood pressure, and the systolic blood pres sure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), pulse pressure (PP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) and baPWV. Results SBP, DBP, PP and MAP in the normotensive group were statistically different from those in the other three groups respectively. Conclusions Increased blood pressure leads to an increase in arterial stiffness and an increase in PWV. SBP, DBP, PP, MAP and PWV were positively correlated.
