John Adams, the second president in U.S. history, has made remarkable contributions to the independence of the United States. When Adams succeeded Washington as president, the United States is facing the danger of a breakdown in its relations with France. By the end of 1797, the two countries were in a tense and explosive war eve. Adams told common sense, to win the war, you must have command of effective commander. Many persuaded him personally to command the army, but he did not think he had the special military aptitude. Thinking back, he believed that Washington was the only commander who could arouse the soul of the United States and unite the people of the entire nation. In the end, he resolved to invite Washington out of the mountains.
