World War II caused tremendous losses to the archives of many European countries, and a large amount of precious historical documents were destroyed by the war. The German fascist aggressor regime, in the occupied European countries, systematically plundered their national wealth and destroyed many archives. Historical documents from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and other nations were robbed and transported to Germany. Archives in Eastern European countries suffered particularly serious damage. Nearly 90% of the documents were lost to the Warsaw Archives, 18,000 documents were stamped and sent to Germany by the Central National Archives in Prague, and one-third of the documents stored were destroyed by the Obavre National Archives in Czechoslovakia . A large number of valuable historical documents of the Tallinn National Archives in Estonia were also shipped to Germany.
