The ~(15)N chemical shift have been measured for α-~(15)N-Iabelled phenylazo-2-naphtholand its lithium complex. The change of the ~(15)N chemical shift on coordination of the azo nitrogen tolithium appears to be related to those of protonation of the same nitrogen. The chemical shifts of azoform and hydrazone form have been calculated according to the weighted δ_N and ~1J_(NH) of differentftactions. It is concluded that there is a bond formation between Li and N atoms.
