   Part 1Overly Fanatic
Jim: Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!! Samantha: What? ①What’s got you so hot and bothered?
Jim: I can’t believe it! My favorite 1)wrestler in the whole wide world, Hulk Hogan, is gonna be signing 2)autographs right here in town!
Samantha: So what? Is he supposed to be like some superhero or something?
Jim: “The Hulkster” is a living legend! I can remember every match he ever had!
Samantha: C’mon…You’re in college now.②Don’t you think it’s high time you stopped living in the past and started embracing the now?
Jim: I will always be a Hulkamaniac, till the day I die. Here, check this out. It’s a limited edition 3)action figure with realistic 4)pivoting motion. And this is an official program from the night he faced the Ultimate Warrior in a steel cage match. And this is my Hulk Hogan pillow wrestling buddy and—
Samantha: Who are you? You seemed like a pretty normal guy, but you’re obviously obsessed with this Hulk person. I always thought The Hulk was some guy who turned big and green when he got mad…
Jim: I am not obsessed. And even if I am, I’d call it a healthy obsession.
Samantha: This is far from healthy. You’ve got toys and dolls as far as the eye can see in here.
Jim: ③I’ll let that one slide, since you are somewhat prone to 5)hyperbole. But you should know that the Hulkster comes first in my life, and everything else comes later.
Samantha: Oh yeah…that sounds like a really healthy 6)approach towards life. I’m sure you’ll find lots of girlfriends that way.
Jim: Don’t worry about me. I’m gonna date one of those hot WWE Divas one day, since I learned all their interests from fan pages and 7)message boards. Samantha: I hope you realize how 8)deluded you sound. I’m sorry I said you were obsessed with Mr. Hulk, when it appears that you’re completely obsessed with wrestling altogether.
Jim: Say what you like, but all I am is a tried and true fan.
Samantha: And a deeply troubled young man.
Jim: ④You’re one to talk. I’ve been to your dorm room, and seen the Adele posters and what not. Does that mean you’re obsessed too?
Samantha: ⑤Nice try, but you’re just 9)deflecting the attention away from your issues. I like Adele, yes, but I don’t listen to her constantly or attend her album signings or anything like that. Jim: Well maybe you’re just not as good a fan as I am.
Samantha: ⑥Or maybe I’m just more of a wellrounded person than you are. However you wanna look at it, it’s unhealthy to spend too much time and energy focused on one thing. You need to expand your horizons.
Jim: I don’t have time for this. I’m going to meet the Hulkster!!
Samantha: Yeah, have fun with that… (under her breath) Loser…

   Part 2Restraining Order
Jenny: What would J-Lo do? What would J-Lo do?
Simon: Hey, what are you mumbling about over there?
Jenny: I’m not sure I should tell you.
Simon: Why? What’s the big deal?
Jenny: ①Well, whenever I tell someone about it, they always jump to conclusions about me.
  Simon: Don’t worry about me. I’m pretty open-minded. I won’t judge.
Jenny: Well, I’ve gotten myself into a bit of a 1)predicament involving my idol, Jennifer Lopez. Simon: Oh, J-Lo! She’s cool. Good singer, great dancer, 2)marginal actress…
Jenny: ②I disagree with your acting assessment, since I think she shines on screen, but that’s beside the point. I’m J-Lo’s biggest fan—literally. I am the head of her national online fan group, The J-Lo-pians.
Simon: That sounds like a very 3)involved gig for a full-time student. How have you managed to handle your schoolwork with all those responsibilities?
Jenny: I can’t. That’s one of the reasons I took a 4)hiatus from school, to spend more time dealing with fan club issues.
Simon: Are you sure that’s the right decision? Maybe you should consider letting someone a bit older handle the fan club.
Jenny: ③Yeah, when pigs fly and hell freezes over. There’s no way I’m gonna 5)skirt my duties as J-Lo’s Number One fan, even if she herself wants me to back off!!
Simon: Woah! Easy now…What do you mean?
Jenny: I mean, after her last concert I went to, I went backstage to see her and they wouldn’t let me in. Then I went outside and waited by where her 6)limo was picking her up, but she walked right by and didn’t notice me, probably due to all the flash bulbs.
Simon: OK. That seems relatively harmless so far.
Jenny: So, later that night, I decided to sit in my car outside her Beverly Hills mansion, waiting for her to come out. You know, I just wanted a minute of her time to organize some sort of social event.④Needless to say, the 7)stunt didn’t go over so well with her security people and lawyers. ⑤Long story short, she filed a restraining order against me. So now I’m not allowed within 100 feet of my favorite person in the world. ⑥And if I violate the order, they can throw me in jail.
  Simon: Wow…
Jenny: I know. ⑦I was even tempted to 8)relinquish the 9)reins to the fan club but, after much soulsearching, I thought better of it.
   Smart Sentences
① Well, whenever I tell someone about it, they always jump to conclusions about me. jump to a conclusion: reach a conclusion without knowing all the facts(在没有弄清事实前就下结论)。例如:
I don’t want to jump to conclusions. I want to know the whole story.
② I disagree with your acting assessment, since I think she shines on screen, but that’s beside the point.
beside the point: irrelevant; of no importance(离题,不重要)。例如:
The design is very colorful, but that’s beside the point. The key should be its practicality.
Simon: So, after all that, you still haven’t learned your lesson?
Jenny: What can I say? I love her, and that’s all there is to it. I would sacrifice everything to be close to her.
Simon: Even when she’s made it 10)abundantly clear that she wants nothing to do with you?
  Jenny: That’s called true love.
Simon: Sorry, but no. I’m afraid that’s called obsession.
③ Yeah, when pigs fly and hell freezes over.
when pigs fly: used to indicate sth. will never occur(绝不可能,永不)。例如:

—When will I be the top of the class?

—You? Only when hell freezes over.
④ Needless to say, the stunt didn’t go over so well with her security people and lawyers.
needless to say: used to emphasize what you are about to say is obvious and expected(不用说)。例如:
Needless to say we need to do more than just celebrating Earth Day.
⑤ Long story short, she filed a restraining order against me.
long story short: make a long story short(长话短说)。例如:
Okay, long story short: the exam is moved to next Monday so we only have three days left.
⑥ And if I violate the order, they can throw me in jail.
throw sb. in jail: imprison sb.(监禁某人,让某人入狱)。例如:

⑦ I was even tempted to relinquish the reins to the fan club but, after much soul-searching, I thought better of it.
think better of it: decide not to do sth. because you realize it would not be sensible(重新考虑决定不做某事)。 I wanted to change my major from English to law. But I thought better of it and studied law as my minor.

   Part 3A “Swift” Lesson
Justin: Hey Selena, what are you up to?
Selena: Just 1)jotting down some 2)random thoughts.
Justin: You mean like a diary?
Selena: I like to think of it as my personal 3)journal. There’s something about the word “diary” that seems private and off-limits, but my journal is an open expression of my thoughts and feelings that anyone can see if they’re interested.
Justin: So it’s kind of like a blog, but on paper.
Selena: I suppose, but not exactly. Bloggers want everyone to see what they’ve written, 4)whereas I don’t care either way, because my writing isn’t intended for an audience.
Justin: That’s cool. So there’s no pressure or anything. When’d you start keeping a journal?
Selena: When I was a kid and started listening to Taylor Swift.
  Justin: Really? ①How come?
Selena: Because, in a world starving for creativity and self-expression, most famous singers and groups have all their songs written for them by a 5)collaborating team of experienced professional 6)composers and 7)lyricists-—But not Taylor.
Justin: Oh! You mean she writes her own stuff?
Selena: Not just that. All her songs are taken from her diary and journal 8)entries growing up, so every word is 9)infused with her own personal 10)flair and emotions.
Justin: Eh, doesn’t seem like such a big deal to me. Selena: Well, that’s cuz you’re an idiot. Taylor is the bravest girl I know. ②She’s unafraid to stand up and speak out, or sing out as the case may be, about what has impacted her, for better or worse. And while her views may differ from mine at times, I admire her for her talent and her honesty in the face of a 11)cynical world.
Justin: Not to mention she’s awfully cute too!
Selena: Be that as it may, she’s not one of those girls, like Britney, who uses her looks and sex appeal to get ahead in the music business. ③She lets her music speak for itself. And any bright-minded, independent woman sees that, and appreciates her efforts.
Justin: Wow, I had no idea you were so into her.
Selena: I guess I didn’t either. Maybe there’s just a lack of young female role models out there. Because young girls need someone to look up to who shows, by example, that our minds and our hearts are our most 12)desirable features, not our faces and bodies. Justin: That’s a very good point. Though it doesn’t hurt that she looks like a million bucks. Selena: But she’s smart enough to realize that beauty fades, but knowledge and talent remain.
Justin: So, one day, when she’s fat and ugly, you think people will still love her music?
Selena: Maybe not as many men, but who cares what you guys think? ④You only know how to judge a book by its cover. But intelligent women, like Taylor and I, have mastered the art of turning the page, to see the truth inside.
   Smart Sentences
  ① How come?
how come…: expression used to ask for the reason for sth.(用以询问理由的表达)。例如:
—You guys don’t need to pack. We are not going tomorrow.
  —How come?
② She’s unafraid to stand up and speak out, or sing out as the case may be, about what has impacted her, for better or worse.
as the case may be: used to indicate that the statement you are making applies equally to the two or more alternatives mentioned(看情况,根据具体情况而定)。例如:
As the case may be, we will decide who would be the best candidate for the job.
for better or worse: unsure whether the consequences will be good or bad, but having to accept them because the action cannot be changed(不论好坏,不管结果如何)。例如:For better or worse, we decided to move in with our parents.
③ She lets her music speak for itself.
speak for itself: quality of sth. is so obvious that there is no need for explanation(不言而喻)。例如:
I don’t need to put in any good words for John. The quality of his work speaks for itself.
④ You only know how to judge a book by its cover.
judge a book by its cover: make a judgment based on the appearance of sth.(以貌取人)。例如:
I know the car looks a bit old, but you can’t judge a book by its cover because I just had it overhauled two months ago.

   Part 1
   Part 2
   Part 3
