意象油画通常被认为以油画的材料作为媒介,意象化地描绘我们心中对客观存在的一种感动。通过对东西方美术比较的研究,意象油画往往被定位于具象与抽象之间的状态进行研究。以油画材料为载体的意象油画在表现形式上,与西方传统的以客观再现自然的具象油画有着巨大的风格差异,与西方现代将观念抽离原本客体的抽象油画,也具有完全不同的艺术气质。油画这一西方舶来的艺术种类,在中国经历了百年的发展之后,在审美趋向和表达方式上不可避免地发生民族化与本土化。中国油画的本土化
