The Mill on the Floss River was one of the early writings of 19th-century British novelist Eliot. Many scholars have interpreted this novel from the perspective of feminism, psychoanalysis, humanitarianism and neo-historicism. This article analyzes the character of Rebekah’s rebellious but constantly compromising character in the novel from the perspective of the paradox and digs out the reason why the author created such a complex character as Maggie. With this seemingly paradoxical character, the author makes the characters and stories in her novels more tense. The author is not really support and praise Maggie as the representative of the rebel spirit of the new women, but to persuade the women to be obedient and willing to sacrifice. This is closely related to the contradictory feminist view of the author and the moral norms at the time that bound the literature.
