体、用是中国哲学中的一对范畴,用以对客观事物的本体与作用、本质与现象进行思维。鸦片战争以后,西方文化东渐,与中国的传统文化发生激烈的撞击。如何处理这两种不同民族、不同时代异质文化的关系,达到交流、融和的目的,成为放在国人面前的一大课题。当时在社会复杂的文化心态中,来自统治阶层中一部分人士提出了“中学为体,西学为用”这一模式。一时成为具有相当影响的社会思潮。对此,裘廷梁表示反对,针对它把体用二元对立的思想方式进行批判,提出体用一元的论点。以牛马体用作比喻生动地作了表述。后来严复在《原强》那篇著名文章中引用了裘的比喻,对中体西用论作了深刻的批判。牛马作用的比喻在中国近代思想史中成了一段佳话。但裘对哲学上体用范畴的理解也有不足之处。文章给予应有的补充。
