厚心钻头由于刚性好,能钻深孔,孔的直线性较好,孔径精度也比标准钻头高,走刀量可提高20%,宜于钻削硬材料和深孔。一支直径为12.7毫米的标准钻头所消耗的约50%的动力是由于横刃造成的,而厚心钻头要增加到70—75%。任何钻头的横刃修磨都需要增加辅助工序和机床。用基座砂轮机或低精度的砂轮机修磨横刃,常常得不到钻尖两切削刃对称的、合符要求的几何形状。因此,钻头的加工性能就很差。

Grinding the chisel edge with a base grinder or a low-precision grinder does not always result in a symmetrical, conforming geometry of the two cutting edges. Therefore, the bit performance is poor.
