1798年,浮世绘画师北尾正演在“四时交加”绘本的序文中第一次使用了“漫画”一词,以表达“随意地绘画”之意;1814年,浮世绘著名画家葛饰北斋的“北斋漫画”刊行,“漫画”一词从此作为专指戏画风格的草图而广为流传;真正确立日本现代漫画基础的是第一位职业漫画家北泽乐天,1901年,他创办了日本第一份漫画刊物“东京小精灵”。日本漫画其实从禅画、浮世绘、狂画、春画等传统绘画中吸取了诸多表现手法,另外也深受英美讽刺漫画以及迪士尼动画影响。真正现代意义上的日本漫画诞生于二战之后,有了鲜明的风格,自此也为日本漫画产业的腾飞奠定
