冶金工厂的高炉,平炉等,由于生产工艺的关系,短时停水将会造成重大事故。为了满足这些设备不间断供水的要求,必须采取保安供水措施,如经常采用高位贮水池(塔)等。贮水池的设置高度以满足保安用水设备事故状态下最大用水压力为准,容积依保安期总用水量来确定。在正常情况下,水泵把水送到高位贮水池,保持经常满水,水再由此流向各用水设备。当发生事故,泵站不能供水时,高位贮水池中的存水,靠位能仍继续向生产设备供给事故用水。
