A Chinese multi-function cargo ship named Tianjian sails on September 16 through the Vilkitskogo Strait, the most complex passage on the newly-opened Arctic Sea route from China to Northern Europe. All five Chinese cargo ships scheduled to ply the Arctic route to Europe have successfully navigated the strait in a three-month ice-free period this year.

China and Russia have achieved progress in exploring the Arctic Sea route as part of their cooperation on the Belt and Road Initiative. The opening up of the regular route will not only further enhance China-Europe trade ties, but also save fuel and reduce carbon emissions signifi cantly.
