渤海沿岸葫芦岛、秦皇岛、塘沽及渤海海峡北部北隍城4个海洋站35年(1961-1996)盐度观测资料显示上述4站的盐度分别升高了1.1,1.6,1.9和0.4.盐度观测资料还显示,过去35年中,渤海至少发生了5次较大盐度变化过程.比较1958年8月和2000年8月渤海大面观测资料,渤海的盐度分布结构也发生了较显著的变化.1958年8月老黄河口外海表层的低盐区已由高盐区替代,盐度变化最大值达10.0以上,且2000年8月从表层到底层盐度量值及分布结构基本一致.比较两年全渤海的盐度可知,渤海大部分海区盐度升高了2.0以上.渤海温盐度场结构的变化导致了渤海环流变化.数值模拟研究结果显示,2000年8月渤海环流和1958年同期环流相比其结构发生了大的变化.环流变化最显著区是渤海湾、莱州湾及其邻近的渤海中部海区.1958年夏季存在的渤海湾外侧的顺时针流环和莱州湾外侧的逆时针流环在2000年夏季已消失,渤海湾逆时针流环位置明显外移,莱州湾内流动方向发生了180°的转向.与渤海环流变化相应,渤海和黄海的水交换量也随之发生了变化,2000年8月较1958年8月渤海与黄海的月平均水交换量减少了0.7×104m3/s.
