目前大体积混凝土在国际上没有一个统一的定义。美国混凝土学会的定义是:任河现浇混凝土,其尺寸到达必须解决水化热及随之引起的体积变形问题,即最大限度减少开裂影响的,即称为大体积混凝土;日本建筑学会的标准定义是:结构断面最小尺寸在80cm以上;水热化引起混凝土内的最高温度和外界气温之差,雨季超过25℃的混凝土,称为大体积混凝土;我国《混凝土结构工程施工及验收规范》认为,建筑物的基础最小边尺寸在1~3m范围内就属于大体积混凝土。
