Breast cancer and colon cancer are associated with obesity. At a science writer’s symposium run by the American Cancer Society in San Diego, the researchers introduced many research efforts aimed at determining the role of fat in cancer and the protective effects of weight loss. The effects of obesity on breast and colon cancer are evident in animal studies conducted by David Kritchevsky at the Wista’s Institute in Philadelphia. In one trial, he allowed 24 female rats to eat heartily; 14 of them developed breast cancer after giving carcinogenic chemicals. However, none of the 24 rats receiving the same carcinogenic chemical and only 60% of the calories consumed by the first group from the diet did not have a breast tumor.
