Bas and bcl-2 are a pair of oppositely acting apoptosis-promoting and suppressing genes, and their unbalanced balance may play an important role in tumorigenesis. DNA ploidy abnormalities are considered to be important prognostic parameters in many types of human tumors. We used flow cytometry and cellular immunofluorescence techniques to detect apoptosis gene bax and bcl-2 protein and DNA ploidy in 70 cases of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and 10 cases of normal esophageal mucosa.
