Monitoring Building Intensity with Fiber Optic Network New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ, is working on a fiber optic “neural” network. Such networks can be ambushed in concrete structures in high-rise buildings, bridges and tunnels to help engineers and technicians detect the stresses and cracks in buildings as early as possible. This fiber optic “neural” network uses optical fiber cables of 250 microns in diameter embedded in damp concrete. When the concrete is cured, one end of such fiber optic cable is connected to a metering device and the other end shows light. If the concrete When a crevice or pressure is created, it presses the “neural” network of light and changes its ability to transmit light. By measuring this change, engineers know exactly what has changed inside the concrete so that timely corrective measures can be taken. U.S. scientists ambush 20 fiber optic cables on a small highway bridge in New Jersey this year
