The incidence of cancer in the United Kingdom recently reached a new peak, especially skin cancer, uterine cancer and prostate cancer increased rapidly. According to the British Cancer Institute, there are about 270,000 cases of cancer diagnosed in 2000; this figure is an additional 3,000 cases compared with the 1999 case count; and 14,800 cases more than the incidence in the first 5 years . Professor David Forman, director of the UK’s Cancer Registry, underlined that cancer mainly affects the health of the elderly and that studies show an increasing number of cancer cases. The incidence of cancer in Scotland is higher than elsewhere in the UK and the incidence of cancer is declining rapidly in these areas, a result that is attributable to the success of Britain’s control of high smoking rates.
