Five years ago, the American Journal of Anesthesiology published a paper on the beneficial effects of barbiturate on cerebral resuscitation after long-term cerebral ischemia initiated by Bleyaert at the Institute for Recovery Studies led by Professor Safar at the University of Pittsburgh. At that time the author had pointed out that “barbiturates may be effective, it may be a scourge.” Recently, the Institute released another experimental report first published by Gisvold, self-denying the claim five years ago and clearly opposing the idea that barbiturates have brain protection. This conclusion is in line with Todd et al.’s suggestion two years ago. It is now openly reported whether the study of whether barbiturates are effective in cerebral resuscitation implies that brain resuscitation will end there. The answer is no, as can be seen from the following points.
