The middle void in the long-distance dependent structure is the bridge connecting the filler and its final void. Psycholinguists through online reading experiments found that English natives did indeed have “interstitial effects” when dealing with such sentences online. However, the situation of second language learners is not clear. In this study, two groups of Chinese EFL learners and a group of native English speakers with different language proficiency were used as subjects. The online reading task designed by the inter-test subjects and the subjects was used to examine the effect of “interstitial space effect” ". As a result, it was found that Chinese EFL learners can not use the gap in the sentence to complete the online reading task as English native speakers did, but there is no significant difference between the two horizontal groups.
