The Strideo Residence is a musical architectural work by architect Steven Holl based on Bela Bartok’s compositions “String, Percussion and Steel Piano Music.” Known for its use of Stretto, this musical feature was translated by Hall from the music clef into modern architecture. The musical element as a creative concept has made Hall’s architectural works produce such features as musical rhythm, order and continuity, thus giving the building a romantic atmosphere. This paper analyzes the relationship between the Stletto residence and Bartok music from three aspects: form, repetition and proportion, with a view to exploring the philosophical idea of Hall ’s architectural thought.
