工艺美学是从审美角度对人类工艺现象、行为和结果进行研究的一门科学。这一基本判断涉及到该学科研究指向的三个层次和研究的大致范围和方法,试分述如下:一、作为人类文化现象的工艺活动,可以追溯到人类最早的造物实践活动。对于人类工艺现象的研究,从原始人制造出第一把最粗陋的工具,到20世纪各种高科技的成就,可以作为工艺发展一个完整的历程来看待。这一链式的历程是由人类无数次的工艺实践活动(现象)所组成。工艺美学恰恰从这个过程的物质文化和精神文化的相互作用中找到自己的位置。工艺美学和文艺美学的区别在于:后者侧重于从艺术的起源、发展和演变中去描述人们审美心理的形成和演变,致力于说明这种审美意识怎样从生产活动中分离出来,及对独立的艺术和风格产生的影响。工艺美学则自始至终把人类的物质活动和精神活动作为一个整体,来研究两者的相互关系,在“物”的演变中把握审美意识和现实生活的关系,以及历史文化和精神特征的演变。
