On January 22, in Rome, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) presented a report providing the basis for internationally agreed safety standards and “acceptable” levels of radioactive contamination of foodstuffs. The report considered the nuclear accident that took place last year in Chernobyl, the Soviet Union, which severely damaged the food trade at the regional and international levels, resulting in the destruction of international norms.
