The worldwide popularity of running sports has rekindled interest in athletics and new racing records have been produced almost every year. However, today’s best runners also dwarf Mentor Ernst prior to their merit, and his running success more than 100 years ago still puzzles physicians and physiologists. The little Norwegian man was found dead by British travelers in 1843 by the Nile, who buried the dead on the beach. Today, the riverbank has vanished and it has submerged the rising water level of Egypt’s Aswan Dam. But today, 139 years after he has died, he remains unrivaled as the greatest long-distance runner known to all.
