how和what是同学们很熟悉的两个词，虽然它们在词义和词性方面均有差异，但是在某些特定的表达中，它们却可以表达相似或相同的意思。从练习和考试的角度来看，这两个词在具体句型中的用法也是命题者比较关注的。所以，将涉及这两个词的相关句型做一个归纳和比较，就显得十分必要。
句型一 表达感叹
（1）How...！
（2）What...！
在感叹句中，how用来修饰形容词或副词，通常用于句型“How 形容词或副词 主语 谓语”；而what用来修饰名词，通常用于句型“What （a / an） 形容词 名词 主语 谓语”（若意思明确，主语和谓语可以省略）。如：
How big the birthday cake is！ 这生日蛋糕好大呀！
What a slow train this is！ 这列火车开得真慢！

句型二 询问看法（A）
（1）How about...？
（2）What about...？
两者含义和用法都差不多，about后接名词或动名词，主要用来提出请求、建议、征求意见或询问看法等，其意为“……怎么样”。如：

What about going out with me tomorrow？ 明天和我一起出去怎么样？

句型三 询问看法（B）
（1）How do you like...？
（2）What do you think of...？

How do you like your English teacher？=What do you think of your English teacher？ 你认为你们的英语老师怎么样？

（2）What’s the size （length， height...） of...？
在询问“大小”“长短”“宽窄”“高低”“多少”等场合，how后接表示“大小”“长短”“宽窄”“高低”“多少”等的形容词，且多用于口语或非正式文体；what后接表示“长短”“宽窄”“高低”“多少”的名词，且多用于正式文体。如：

How long is the ruler？=What’s the length of the ruler？ 这把尺子有多长？
