中国民间艺术的审美特征,张道一先生在《中国民间美术的美学特征》一文中概括到:“在内容和形式上:真、全、艳、健;在风格和特色上:粗、俗、野、土”。神庙戏台装饰在具有这些共性特征的同时,因区别于其他民间艺术的特殊使用目的和由此造就的审美趣味,常常显示出一种相互对立的两极审美状态。这种美感两极对立,矛盾相互依存非常显著,形成神庙戏台自己独特的审美文化特征。其中神秘、狞厉与直白、平实是其这种审美特征的构成之一。

One of the mysterious, 狞 Li and straightforward, plain is one of the components of this aesthetic characteristics.
