Relative biological effectiveness(RBE)is one of the most important parameters in determining the biological efficacy of heavy ion beams. RBE is roughly a simple function of LET,which is the rate of energy deposition in the linear dimension. However,it is known that the RBE in an extremely high-LET region is not a simple relationship. Also,RBE is an important parameter not only for designing the spread-out Bragg peak(SOBP)but also for treatment planning. In this study, human salivary gland tumor(HSG)cells were exposed to carbon ions in the deep-seated tumor therapy terminal at HIRFL-CSR.
