During the flu season, the flu in the United States started to get premature and its prevalence was likely to increase across the country. Serious cases, including fatalities, have been reported in children. This report provides an overview of the flu prevalence in the United States from 4 October to 6 December 2003. The CDC received a report on the situation on December 6, when the flu had spread to 26 states. The onset of the flu season early and the long period of demand and demand for vaccines has led to a shortage of supply of trivalent inactivated vaccines. Vaccination should be emphasized for high-risk groups with influenza complications, including healthy children aged 6-23 months. Consideration should be given to nasal vaccination of live-attenuated attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) to healthy 5- to 49-year-olds willing to be vaccinated.
