The focus of the development of China’s auto industry in the 1990s is to open up the family car market. This is what Ye Qing, deputy director of the State Development Planning Commission, disclosed at a press conference held recently on the policy of “industrial automobile industry.” Ye Qing said that in the 1990s, China encouraged the development of cars, greatly increased the localization rate of auto parts and components, and overcame the structural defects of small scale and dispersed production at present. During this period, China will make efforts to form a number of large automobile production groups based on the existing production bases. By 2000, China’s automobile production is expected to reach 2 million vehicles, of which 90% will be produced by these groups and half will be sedans.
