Waterflooding in clay-sensitive sandstone formations often leads to decreased permeability and reduced waterflooding capability. Some types of clay expand upon contact with fresh water, block pore throats and reduce permeability. When migrating clays (including kaolinite and illite) are trapped in the pore throat passages, they reduce permeability.
