I have painted paintings of Tibetan style themes for almost 50 years now, but my first contact with Tibet was purely accidental. That was the spring of 1960, and I was a fifth-grader at Wu Zuoren Studio of the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. I was preparing for graduation and was suddenly informed by the college that I would attend the visit to the cultural and art circles in the capital for six months. At that time, Lhasa had just begun to quell the rebellion and started democratic reforms. Many historical traces of the people’s livelihood under the past serf system were still seen in the streets. The urban areas were in turmoil, and the dilapidated houses were broken again and again.
