According to the federal fuel economy standards, car fuel consumption by 1985 should be 27.5 miles / gallon, eventually reaching 50 miles / gallon. Therefore, to reduce the weight of the car, manufacturers are eager to adopt reinforced plastic composite materials. For example, graphite fiber reinforced plastic can save up to 70% of the weight of conventional materials. 1979 Ford Ford cars manufactured by Ford Motor Company, using graphite fiber reinforced material about 600 pounds. Most parts are made of epoxy composites reinforced with graphite fibers or other fibers such as glass fiber. In fact, the entire bodywork, frame and chassis (about 160 parts) are made of graphite fiber reinforced composite material. The car is 1250 pounds lighter than the Model LTD car (3750 pounds) it now produces. It can be powered by a 2.3-liter, 4-cylinder engine. Experimental data table
