As a literary theory, defamiliarization aims to bring new and novel feelings to the recipient. In the field of translation, some scholars apply the theory of defamiliarization to literary translation, promoting the further prosperity and development of translation. Hsu Chih-mo is one of them, whose remarkable feature of English-Chinese translation is the extensive use of defamiliarization. This article attempts to explore the unique artistic charm of the defamiliar translation of Xu Zhimo’s poems from three aspects of translation, words and syntax.
