My name is Jordan Malone. I’m a short track speed skater, and this is my first Olympics. This is Oly, O-L-Y, short for Olympics, and I got him about a year and a half ago. Times were hard for me. I’d just broke up with someone, and I needed a companion, someone who wouldn’t distract me. And every day I’d get home from practice, and no matter what I do on the ice, he’s always super happy to see me, so he’s my...he’s my energy off the ice.
The fifteen hundred I...I didn’t do very great. I didn’t do very good. I got 1)DQd in the first round. I felt strong, I felt like it...I had the...I had some good rounds in me, but I got “short-tracked” is the term now, so it’s part of the sport and it’s part of what happened. You know what I did? I actually went and saw Oly afterwards, after the race, and my Mom brought him. He was in the car, so, you know, he didn’t care. He was like, “Whatever dad, I love you.” Made me feel a lot better. Yeah, it was great. So I’ve been teaching him tricks, and he...he knows how to sit, he knows how to lay down, he knows how to roll over. He actually knows how to turn, but he’s a...he’s a short track dog, so he can only turn left.
He’s great. He actually doesn’t ever make a noise. The only noises he ever makes, he barks more in his sleep than he does...in...when he’s awake. And he’s super cute, when I take him in the airport with me. He’s been on a couple trips. He went to ’09 National Trials. He went to 2010 Olympic Trials, and he’s here at the Olympics.
That was the entire basis of where we were gonna stay. We couldn’t stay somewhere in the city that had a “no dog” policy. We had to find a house that it could allow dogs. We had to...had to make sure that our team manager made it acceptable for me to take him on the flight and 2)whatnot, otherwise I was gonna have to find my own transportation.
Dogs are good for people in general, but for me as an athlete, it’s...it’s really great for me to just have that unconditional love and support at all times, you know. If I want to feel better, all I have to do is walk out the door and walk back in. He’s like, “You’re back!”
I think he’s made me a more comfortable athlete. Every athlete has to deal with ups and downs, and how an athlete deals with the “downs” allows him to repeat the“ups.” So I think he’s helping me succeed. Yeah, I do.
