【Objective】 To investigate the dynamic changes of the number and function of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and their relationship with the level of nitric oxide (NO) after acute exercise. 【Methods】 Eight healthy male volunteers were selected to dynamically observe the number and function of endothelial progenitor cells before and after exercise for 30min, 3h, 6h, 12h and 24h. Plasma NO levels were also measured before and after exercise. 【Results】 The numbers and functions of circulating EPCs in healthy volunteers rose to its peak at 30 minutes after acute exercise. The levels of circulating endothelial progenitor cells began to decline gradually 3 hours after exercise and returned to their normal levels 24 hours after exercise. This change correlated with the dynamic changes of plasma NO levels The trends are similar. There was a linear correlation between plasma NO levels and the number and function of circulating endothelial progenitor cells. 【Conclusion】 Acute exercise increased the number and function of circulating endothelial progenitor cells in healthy adults for a relatively short time, which may be related to the decrease of plasma NO level. Suggesting long-term exercise is needed to maintain the up-regulation of the number and function of circulating endothelial progenitor cells in healthy adults.
