Calder’s 54-foot-tall flamingo sculpture towers over the central square of Chicago’s federal government. It set off a storm in Chicago and aroused public praise; its strong response was never before seen by any American artist. When Calder came to the central plaza to attend the inauguration of the flamingo, thousands of people took to the streets to greet him in honor of heroes. Calder was born in Pennsylvania in 1898. Grandfather and father are sculptors; mother is an artist. He studied engineering but joined the Navy during the First World War; he worked as a timekeeper in the logging area, during which time he persisted in drawing pictures. In 1920, he created the circus sculptures. 1920-1930, he was removed between the United States and Europe. In Paris, he learned of the modern trends of various genres and quickly created activity sculptures and stable sculptures. He created unique pieces in various ways to rediscover the new concept of “sculpture.” Lively, light and dynamic are all characteristics of young art. The sense of humor is not ostensibly entertainment or pastime; it adds dignity to sense of humor, and dignity comes from the artist’s concentration on creation. Coupled with the sensitivity to the creative material and the pursuit of the order of the new form, it is Carder’s job features that allow him to create new forms constantly.
