仙人掌树和普通的圆片仙人掌是近亲,但它却像一棵树,有圆柱形的树干,干上狭长的掌片像树枝,其上长出的圆形掌片又酷似一片片大叶子。虽然它的各部位从植物学角度来看都属于茎,但它会因自己出生的位置不同而具有不同的形状。出于对它奇特造型的喜爱,本人多年来一直养着几株。仙人掌树和一般仙人掌习性相同。喜阳光充足的环境,很适合阳台和屋顶花园栽培。生性强健,喜温暖湿润的气候.耐旱耐寒,能适应北方干燥的空气。喜排水良好、富含腐殖质的沙壤土,也耐瘠薄。最适生长温度20～35℃。冬季0℃以上可安全越冬。
