1997年1～11月,本市共批准外商投资项目1632个,比1996年同期下降16.99％;合同外资金额48.9亿美元(按原协议外资口径为77.9亿美元,比1996年同期下降22.15％),这标志着上海利用外资在连续3年协议外资金额超过100亿美元之后,进入了一个调整期。从外商投资项目产业结构和地区分布来看,1997年以上海通用汽车项目和华虹-NEC项目为代表的一批大型工业项目落户浦东,体现了浦东独特的区位优势,同时外商投资工业项目无论从项目数还是合同外资金额上都超过了房地产项目,分别占1997年1～11月总项目数和总合同外资金额的55.88％和58.03％。
