As the first Portuguese to visit Portugal, Portugal was the first Europeans to come to China from the sea. Sino-Portuguese contacts also made the beginning of the diplomatic history of modern China. As early as the early 16th century, the Portuguese merchant ships arrived in the Pearl River Mouth area and tried to establish trade relations with China. The initial contacts between China and Portugal, which had caused some clashes as a result of the huge differences in civilization, were finally accepted by local officials in Guangdong. After half a century, the Portuguese were allowed to reside in Macao and engage in trade activities. Since then, even the Sino-Portuguese exchange between China and Portugal has also started around a radius of only a few miles to the Macao Peninsula. It was not until the opening of Hong Kong in the 1840s that Macao’s role was gradually replaced.
