柯劭忞從事經學研究,既有家學淵源,也有師友的相互影響。他致力於《春秋穀梁傳》的注解,既有明道救世的需要、對晚清公羊學興盛局面的回應以及對前人《春秋穀梁傳》注釋的不滿等原因。他提出應重視漢代劉(向)鄭(玄)的穀梁學成果、以“九旨”爲《春秋穀梁傳》綱領、《春秋》有筆削大義、注解《春秋穀梁傳》要會通三傳等經學主張。在注解《春秋穀梁傳》的過程中,形成訓傳詁之據、證文字之、證説解之、通傳文之義例、以史説經和不尚讖緯異説等特色。因此,柯劭忞的《春秋穀梁傳注》具有重要的學術價值和學術地位。
