For more than 30 years since Urist discovered and proposed bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) theory in 1965, BMP has been well studied in theory and clinical applications. It is now recognized that BMP is an acidic polypeptide that is diffusible and induces the irreversible differentiation of undifferentiated mesenchymal cells into cartilage and bone cells in vivo and in vitro and is recognized as a member of the TGF-β superfamily.
