Burning Engineering (CE) is one of the industry’s major manufacturers of plant equipment at Chattanooga. One of the hardest parts to manufacture is the tube plate of a steam generator among the nuclear equipment produced by CE. 1000 U-tube ends are supported by the tube plate. These tubes must be able to withstand the heat of the primary loop heated by the core. Heat is transmitted through the pipe wall to the secondary circuit water, turning it into steam, driving the steam turbine and generator. The raw tube sheet is a round A508 forged steel, 2 feet thick and 16 feet in diameter. Forging a layer of Inconel surfacing a heat-resistant alloy, and then welded on a shell, weight gain
