All ethnic groups in the world have the question of how to inherit the cultural traditions. Due to differences in the mechanisms of formation and value orientation, China, which represents Eastern culture, and Europe, which represents Western culture, formed different modes of inheriting tradition. In contrast, China is an example of abiding by the principle of “never ending after all” and is good at inheritance of style and artistry. Europe is innovating in the revival and transformation of “classical”. In the past two decades, the opening up of China has flocked to the Western culture, leaving us trapped in the dilemma of inheriting the tradition and adapting itself to the modern society. Art design (including traditional handicrafts) is the first to suffer. A comparative study of the succession of traditional Chinese and western traditions may be helpful in relieving this confusion.
