In November 1985, Winston Lord, the sixth U.S. ambassador to China, arrived in Beijing at the age of 48 and was the youngest U.S. ambassador to China. Before his trip to China, he had visited China 11 times with U.S. leaders such as Nixon, Kissinger and Ford. As a result, he is no stranger to a large number of Chinese people. Lord was born in New York City on August 14, 1937 and graduated from Yale University in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in literature. In 1960 he studied into the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University with a master’s degree in literature. From 1969 to 1973, the National Security Council was turned into a special assistant to Kissinger, the assistant to the president for national security affairs, following Kissinger’s secret activities in participating in the relations with China and with the Soviet Union.
