The authors studied the pathogenesis of low birth weight infants. Deafness is a big problem, accounting for 15.9%. The cause is hypoplasia, ototoxic drugs, warm box noise and perinatal complications such as hypoxemia and acidosis, which often cause brain lesions. The mechanisms by which these lesions cause deafness are unknown. This article studies the pathogenesis and incidence of deafness in low birth weight infants. Between 1971 and 1973, the authors encountered a total of 235 newborns below 1800 grams and 136 survivors. There were 98 follow-up visits between 1978 and 1979 with a mean follow-up of 6 (1/2) years. Follow-up included physical examination, ophthalmology, neurology, and otology. Neonatal treatment includes prevention of disease and adequate nutrition, the former including hypoxia
