屠杉最早称“朱木”，始见先秦时期《山海经》，我国南方人民对其认识与利用有３３００多年历史。曾经历过“朱木、杉、屠杉、杉”等主流文字与音韵的演变，因地域方言及著录者选用汉字的不同，尚有“柁杉、杉、杉、株杉、土杉、杜杉、杜松、山杉”等多种称谓。“朱木”之称源于古越语，最早认识利用杉的是我国南方古越人。语言与文字源于人们的社会生产实践，不同名称反映产区人民已从植物形态分类学、生态学、木材学等多角度认识杉。记载杉的史料均来自目前已无杉分布的地区，证明杉历史上曾广泛分布。
