He Yanguang was born soon after the founding of New China, and during the Cultural Revolution, as one of the millions of urban "intellectual youth," he went to the countryside of Northeast China. In April 1976, at the age of 25, because of his participation in the "April 5 Movement" against the "Gang of Four," he was arrested and punished with a seven-month imprisonment.
