AIM: To compare the effects of ox-LDL on endothelium-dependent relaxation in isolated carotid artery and basilar artery in rabbits. Methods: The effects of ox-LDL and L-arginine on the endothelium-dependent diastolic function of rabbit artery were determined by isometric tension method. Results: Lower concentrations of ox-LDL (50μG · ml-1) significantly inhibited carotid artery mediated acetylcholine-mediated endothelium-dependent relaxation without inhibiting endothelium-independent relaxation. L-Arg partially reversed ox-LDL-induced loss of carotid endothelium-dependent diastolic function. Conclusion: ox-LDL can inhibit endothelium-dependent relaxation of rabbit carotid artery without affecting the endothelium-dependent relaxation of basilar artery. Supplementation of L-Arg can improve the impaired endothelium-dependent diastolic function.
