It is dangerous to lack the knowledge of virtue without the virtue of knowledge. Only by combining the two can we create noble personality and lay a solid foundation for the useful material of mankind. In 1872, the Qing government sent the first batch of publicly-funded students in the history of China to the United States. The group of Chinese boys, averaging less than 14 years of age, set off from Shanghai, across the Pacific Ocean and eventually to New England in the northeastern United States. They overcame the language barrier at an alarming rate and opened the world journey of an ancient nation. In 1875, Liang Cheng, a boy under the age of 12, from Guangdong accepted the fourth batch of students studying in the United States.
